TOK, ALASKA

ALASKA STORY

08   /   2017

This home has a very Alaskan story. It started out as a man and his daughter building a log cabin for her and her family. The foundation was built of barrels buried in the ground and filled with dirt. Along the way as the family and the home grew. The roof replaced with a 2nd story that over hung the original cabin to add more space. Because space was at a premium the stairs had a 11 inch rise and a 7 inch tread. A one story addition more than doubled the original cabin footprint. Two more small additions were added, giving the home a bathroom and laundry room and making the street side of the house the only side that remained the same.

The owners would now like the home to be more cohesive and up to date so they extended the walls of the overhanging 2nd story to the ground and set them on concrete footings. The original logs and barrel foundation were taken out from the inside once the new walls were in place. The small additions where removed and we came up with an open floor plan with a much more navigable staircase. The 2nd story now has a bathroom for the 3 bedrooms there. We moved the front door to the street side, put in a central bathroom and laundry and moved the kitchen and living/dining area to the sunny south side of the home.
